- IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT YOUR DIRECTOR SERIAL NUMBER

- The first time you run Director version 4.0.3, you will be asked to
- re-enter your serial number. IMPORTANT: The Director serial
- number prefix has changed from DM400- to DRM403-.
-
- Example:
-
- If your Director 4.0 serial number was ... DM400-1234-5678-9012
- ... your new serial number will be ... DRM403-1234-5678-9012
-

- HOW TO USE THE DIRECTOR 4.0.3 UPDATER
-
- ••• Step 1: Run the 4.0.3 Update Installer.
-
- If you have already run the Update Installer, skip to Step 2 below.
-
- The 4.0.3 Update Installer is a small program that installs a folder
- called Director 4.0.3 Update on your computer’s hard disk.
-
- The Director 4.0.3 Update folder contains the following files:
-
- • Read Me First! — a copy of the file you are reading now
- • Director 4.0.3 Updater — the updater program
- • Director 4.0 Resources — latest version
- • FontMap.TXT — latest version
-
- If you have not yet run the installer, run it now:
-
- 1) Double-click the 4.0.3 Update Installer icon.
- 2) Select a location to install the Director 4.0.3 Update folder.
- 3) Click OK.
- 4) When the installer has finished, click Quit.
- 5) The installer quits.

- ••• Step 2: Update the Director 4.0 application file.
-
- The Director 4.0.3 Updater is a small program that updates the
- English version of Director 4.0 or 4.0.1 to version 4.0.3.
-
- To update your copy of Director 4.0 or 4.0.1 to version 4.0.3, do the
- following:
-
- 1) Make a backup copy of your Director 4.0 file.
- 2) Locate and open the Director 4.0.3 Update folder installed earlier.
- 3) Double-click the Director 4.0.3 Updater.
- 4) When the updater title screen appears, click once to proceed.
- 5) A dialog box appears with three buttons.
- 6) Click the “Patch” button.
- 7) A file dialog box appears.
- 8) Locate your Director 4.0 file.
- 9) The update can take about five minutes to complete.
- 10) The Updater will tell you if the patch was successful. Click OK.

- Note ==> The Director 4.0 file name has not changed, but the version
- number has been updated to 4.0.3.

- To verify that Director was updated properly, click the Director 4.0
- icon in the Finder to select it, and then choose Get Info from the
- Finder’s File menu.

- The Director 4.0 Info window will show:
-
- Version: 4.0.3, Copyright 1985-1994 Macromedia, Inc.
-
- ••• Step 3: Update the Director 4.0 Resources file.
-
- The Director 4.0.3 updater disk contains an updated version of the
- Director 4.0 Resources file. This file must be stored in the same
- folder as the updated Director 4.0.3 application file.
-
- To install the updated Director 4.0 Resources file:
-
- 1) Make a backup copy of your existing Director 4.0 Resources file.
- 2) Drag the Director 4.0 Resources file from the Director 4.0.3 Update
- folder, replacing the Director 4.0 Resources file in your Director 4.0
- folder.

- Note ==> The name of the Director 4.0 Resources icon has not
- changed, though the version number has been updated to 4.0.3.
-
- To verify that you have correctly replaced the Director 4.0 Resources
- file, click once to select the Director 4.0 Resources icon in the Finder,
- and then choose Get Info from the Finder’s File menu.

- The Director 4.0 Resources Info window will show:
-
- Version: 4.0.3, Copyright 1985-1994 Macromedia, Inc.
-
- ••• Step 4: Replace your FontMap.TXT file.
-
- The Director 4.0.3 updater disk contains an updated version of the
- FontMap.TXT file. This file should be stored in the same folder as the
- updated Director 4.0.3 application file.

- To install the updated FontMap.TXT file:
-
- 1) Drag a copy of the FontMap.TXT file from the Director 4.0.3 Update
- folder, replacing the FontMap.TXT file in your Director 4.0 folder.
-
- Note: Every Director movie contains a font-mapping table that
- controls font-mapping and character-mapping behavior for that
- movie only. The FontMap.TXT located in the Director 4.0 folder is
- automatically loaded ONLY into NEW movies that you create. If you
- want to load the updated FontMap.TXT into an existing Director
- movie, first open the movie, then choose the Movie Info command
- from the File menu. Then click Load from File, and select the
- updated FontMap.TXT file located in the Director 4.0 Folder.

- CHANGES IN VERSION 4.0.3

- ••• Improvements to interoperability with Director 4.0 for Windows:

- • Director no longer fails to map most upper-ASCII characters.
- • A new FontMap.TXT provides better cross-platform font mapping.
- • A new videoForWindowsPresent Lingo function has been added.

- ••• Crashes in Director 4.0 that have been fixed in version 4.0.3:

- • Using factories in movies with a Shared Cast.
- • Calling unloadCast while editable text appears on stage.
- • Running with many complex Lingo scripts loaded at once.
- • Using mouseDown property with a mouseDown movie script.
- • Switching folders after using a movie with a shared cast.
- • Playing linked AIFF sounds in Projectors under 6.0.7.
- • Using the Lingo open command in Projectors under 6.0.7.
- • Starting up without 32-bit QuickDraw in Projectors under 6.0.7.

- ••• Other bugs in Director 4.0 that have been fixed in version 4.0.3:

- • Editable, scrolling text fields now work correctly in projectors.
- • Any sound can now be looped whether or not it has loop points.
- • QuickTime sprites now rewind after a blank cell in the channel.
- • Director no longer occasionally hangs when printing scripts.
- • Film loops are now properly updated after moving cast members.
- • Buttons without text are no longer deleted on closing text window.
- • No white flash appears when projectors start up.
- • “Contract White Space” option on PICS import was backwards.
- • The mouseUp event hierarchy is now the same as mouseDown.
- • 16-bit Photoshop files now import correctly.
- • Checkboxes & radio buttons now work in movies in a window.
- • The creator type of projectors can now be changed.
- • Script error dialogs in projectors now show a cursor.
- • Import All can now be cancelled.
- • Typing speed is no longer impaired when running WorldScript II.
- • Lingo always finds handlers after going to a movie and returning.
- • Functions charToNum/numToChar work with 2-byte characters.
- • Lingo Message Hierarchy now performs as documented. Please note:
- Make sure the mouseUpScript is not assigned "dontPassEvent" when
- you have buttons with mouseUp scripts active. In prior versions of
- Director "dontPassEvent", in some cases, was incorrectly ignored
- when processing the mouseUpScript.
